THE TEACHING INSTITUTE FOR ART & LAW

The Teaching Institute for Art & Law connects the distributed networks, the Performing Pro Arts Commons, & the cyber-commons D@d@is Americanus/DAO.

We are developing an entirely new infrastructure by experimenting with dynamic and subversive forms of self organization, of innovating through law, and of commoning.

We are in the process of developing the D@d@is Americanus/DAO. If you are not familiar with what a DAO is, it is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization - a member owned community built by combining blockchain technology with decentralized governance. DAOs are defining new global social contracts that address injustice, oppression, and lack of transparency and accountability. If you are not familiar with DAOs and would like to learn more, please take a look at How We Can Encode Human Rights In The Blockchain by Nathan Schneider from June, 2022.

A DAO is both the code and the community of users, as well as the protocols, rules, and values that the community has agreed upon to manage the DAO. This enables the importance of DAO governance to be emphasized. DAOs serve as a sandbox for the community to experiment with new methods of governance, funding, and organization as the blockchain world expands and uncovers new directions. Philémon Poux - May 12, 2022

The Teaching Institute for Art & Law will work with artists and DAO members on how to occupy intellectual property for collective liberation. We will distribute the curriculum to DAO members in a way that members can co-own their collectively produced intellectual property, including curriculum, pedagogy, performance, and art (including ideas, objects, or concepts).

MODULE 1: TOOLKIT FOR THE AUTONOUS ARTIST.

COMING SOON!

Over the last five years, artists and social justice organizations have engaged in extensive work on what has, and what has not, worked when decentralizing power and leadership in arts and other institutions. Partly this has been a response to the COVID pandemic, but generally it is a desire to address abuses of power and lack of transparency.

This critical and generative work on decentralization has resulted in reports, documents, processes, and artworks that offer extensive learning. There are emerging models, methodologies, strategies, and tools on how to decentralize and generate autonomy in an organization.

We are developing this module and will begin posting materials and open the module to the public. Please join us on this adventure. More soon!
